Artist Statement

Rebecca works predominantly on canvas and paper. Through her work she explores the notions of memory and mood. Focused on creating work, which is balanced and rhythmic, it is through gestural marks that she develops and transfers her memory or mood to the canvas or paper. A vibrant colour palette is often used in Rebecca’s work, communicating an underling tone of playfulness and joy. Through layering each artwork with different mediums Rebecca develops the mood or memory she is encountering revealing new complexities.

The creation of the work comes from a desire to be able to communicate. Struggling from a shyness, which can impede the artist’s ability to articulate her own voice. Overtime Rebecca’s work has increased in scale and she has widened her use of mediums. Correlating with her own personal growth and gained confidence in her voice. Her early work had a simpler form focusing on colour and composition, whereas her present day work hopes to have more energy, fluidity and life, which is invigorating. However, the sense of colour is the common thread throughout her body of work.

At the heart of each artwork Rebecca hopes to offer a sense of her soul to the environment the artwork sits in whether that be in her studio, gallery or public space. She believes that through the creation of work we alter the path we are on. Through her work she wishes to input a sense of joy, youth and humour.
